Here is the latest input from Faye and Vic Sharpe concerning the Fall Come Around in Ouray, CO. Sounds like a good
one!
Ouray, CO Come Around, 4-10
September, 2008
Firsties:
Vic and Faye Sharpe, 1918 Banbury Road, Raleigh,
NC 27608
Campground:
4J+1+1 RV Park and Campground

Now is the time to make your campground reservations if you think that you might
be attending the come around in Ouray on 4-10 September. The 4J+1+1 campground is family-owned (since 1958) by Jack and Jackie
Clark (two of the 4-Js). Jill Schoenebaum (pronounced Shay-ne-bom) (another one of the 4-Js) says that even though the office is closed for
the winter, they check the phone often (not daily) and will return your call. The
number is 970-325-4418. She said to say that you are with the Naval Academy RV group so she will know to put us together.
She will put as many of our rigs as possible in one of the 13 spaces by the river. There are an additional 16 pull-through
spaces with full hookups. Their literature says that there are 46 full hook-ups, 8 W&E and 8 E. They accept
Visa and MC. It is
a popular campground, so the earlier you make your reservations, the better.
The daily
rate is $28 for a space when 2 people occupy. For more guests, the surcharge is $2 per person per day. If you stay a week,
you get a 10% discount, which is the only discount they offer. We are planning to arrive a day early and have made our reservations
for 3-10 September. We would appreciate your e-mailing us when you have made your campground reservations (FayeSharpe@aol.com).
Also,
the Navy/Air Force football game will be played in Colorado Springs
on Saturday, 4 October 2008, just a little bit after the Come Around in Ouray! Bill and Kathie Corroum and Bill and Dee
Bradford are planning on heading to Colorado Springs and settling
in at the Air Force Academy Famcamp in preparation for the game.

In from Faye and Vic Sharpe '48, about their plans for a Fall get together next year. Sounds like a lot of fun.
“But still when two or three shall meet, and old tales be retold…”
Ouray, Colorado is the place to meet Thursday, September 4 - Wednesday, September 10, 2008. Vic and Faye
Sharpe are planning a USNAAA RV Chapter come around in Ouray. Hopefully you can plan your travels to join them there.
Ouray, a small town of 800 souls, is nestled at 7800 feet altitude among the 13,000 to 14,000-foot peaks
of the majestic San Juan Mountains, considered by many the most spectacular scenery in the nation. It has the nickname “Switzerland
of America” and “Jeep Capital of the World”. The town is steeped in history with prospectors rushing to
the area in the late 1800s to make their fortunes in numerous gold and silver mines. Remarkably, two-thirds of Ouray’s
original Victorian structures are still occupied, and Ouray is a State and National Historic District.
There is lots to do while enjoying the Ouray area. Our campground, 4J+1+1 RV Park and Campground, is only
two blocks from the center of town and is located on the lovely Unconpahgre River. Vic’s daughter Sara, a caterer and
bed and breakfast proprietor, lives a short two blocks away. Sara has offered to welcome us into her home for our happy hours,
pot luck dinner, a catered meal, and at any other time. She has a large covered porch and a lovely yard where we will be able
to relax and enjoy ourselves. She also offers free wireless internet. She has a parking area for those who choose to drive
from the campground.
Our activities may include:
A half-day guided jeep tour ending in the well-known ski resort Telluride, Colorado, and a free gondola ride
Touring a gold and silver mine
Visiting what the Smithsonian Institution called “the best little museum in the West”
Car pooling to the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, Colorado’s other Grand Canyon
Visiting Ouray’s Box Canyon Falls followed by a drive on the million dollar highway to Silverton, Colorado
Strolling down Ouray’s Main Street and shopping in numerous arts and crafts galleries
Relaxing in the therapeutic hot mineral springs, a short walk from the campground
Golfing at nearby Divide Ranch and Club, named among the “Best Places to Play” by Golf Digest
magazine.
In addition to a pot luck dinner and a catered meal at Sara’s home, dining at local restaurants.
Before arriving or after leaving Ouray, you might want to enjoy riding on the famous Durango to Silverton
Railway and touring Mesa Verde National Park. Both are within 100 miles south of Ouray.
